Melanotan 2 10mg (MT-2) research vial
Melanotan 2, also called MT-2 or Melanotan II, is a lab-made ring of 7 amino acids; a 10mg vial is 3,600,000 VND ($140 USD). MT-2's three papers, 1996 to 2017, are linked below; we checked its price on 11 October 2026.
What is MT-2?
MT-2 is built from alpha-MSH, the natural hormone that tells skin to make dark pigment.
PT-141, also on this shelf, is a close relative.
It is a ring rather than a straight chain, which is why the 1996 study, in its PubMed title, calls it a cyclic peptide.
Good to know
MT-2 and PT-141 are close relatives but different compounds. The MT-2 record here is two very small human studies, from 1996 and 2000, and later case reports of mole changes and skin cancers, while PT-141 has larger trials of its own. Compare the two pages side by side.
MT-2: two small studies, then the case reports
- Human trial, 1996. A pilot study in 3 men tracked skin color and side effects, which included nausea, yawning and tiredness. Three people are far too few to show what anyone else should expect.
- Human trial, 2000. 20 men with erection problems had MT-2 and a placebo. The study measured erections and desire, and nausea was a common side effect.
- Review, 2017. A review of case reports that link melanotan to mole changes and a few skin cancers. Case reports cannot prove cause.
Two small human studies, from 1996 and 2000. Most later papers are case reports of side effects, including the mole and skin cancer reports above.
How to read this
MT-2 is one of the few peptides here where the newer papers are mostly about harm. The 1996 and 2000 studies were very small, three men in one and 20 in the other, and both listed nausea. Since then, the literature is mostly case reports linking melanotan to mole changes and some skin cancers. Case reports cannot prove cause, but they are the main signal in the recent record.
The MT-2 paper trail
The 1996 study ran in Life Sciences, with 3 men, and the 2000 study, with 20 men and a placebo group, in a journal of erection research. The 2017 review appeared in the International Journal of Dermatology. Most later papers on melanotan are case reports, and the review notes they link it to mole changes and a few skin cancers without proving cause.

Questions about MT-2
What has research on MT-2 looked at?
Skin color and erections in two small human studies from 1996 and 2000, and later case reports of side effects such as mole changes.
How is MT-2 related to alpha-MSH?
MT-2 is built from alpha-MSH, the body's own hormone that tells skin to make dark pigment, and is closed into a ring of 7 amino acids. PT-141, on the same shelf, is a close relative.
