What is BPC-157?
BPC-157 is a short chain of 15 amino acids made in a lab. It was first described as a piece of a protein found in human stomach juice.
There are more than 200 papers on it. Most of them come from one research group in Zagreb, Croatia: 175 of the 231 PubMed records found list the same lead researcher.
BPC-157 in rat, cell and review papers
- Review, 2025. A review gathered 36 studies of BPC-157 in muscle, tendon and bone injury research. All but one were animal or lab work; the odd one out was clinical.
- Animal study, 2008. Rats had the Achilles tendon cut away from the bone. For 4 days the team tracked walking, swelling and new blood vessels, with BPC-157, a steroid or salt water.
- Cell study, 2014. Rat tendon cells in a dish were checked for growth hormone receptors, and for how fast they grew once growth hormone was added.
Nearly all of it is rats and cells. The human side is tiny: a 2024 pilot gave BPC-157 to 12 women with a painful bladder condition and asked them to rate their symptoms, with no placebo group. A 2025 review notes that drug regulators have not approved BPC-157, and it gives the reason as a lack of human studies.
How to read this
Start with who did the work. When 175 of about 231 papers share one lead researcher, most of the work comes from one group. Next, look at the models: a rat with a cut tendon is a useful test, but a rat tendon is not a human one. The tendon cell study is a dish experiment, a step away from a living body. And the human reports are tiny: one clinical study in the review, and a small pilot with no comparison group. A design like that can raise a question; it cannot settle one.
